We received a call from D.U. from Šabac, who reached out to our organization for help. We responded immediately. She told us that a small yellow female dog had wandered into her yard a few weeks ago. She said the dog was wonderful, played with her own dog, and when you pet her head, she seemed to smile. She named her Lusi. The problem was that she suspected Lusi was pregnant. Of course, we responded to her request and scheduled an appointment for spaying. Our volunteer, Tanja, went to pick up Lusi. D.U. welcomed her kindly, led her into the yard, and showed her where Lusi had been sleeping—under the stairs, in the shade. Our volunteer took Lusi from the yard and brought her to the veterinary clinic. The spaying went well, and Lusi stayed at the clinic for three days. As an organization, we covered all the costs. Once she had received all the necessary treatments and recovered, our volunteer picked her up with the intention of returning her to the yard she was taken from, solely for the spaying procedure. And that’s where the problem started. D.U. no longer cared about Lusi and didn’t want her back in the yard. She yelled at our volunteer, demanding that she take the dog away. The volunteer tried to calmly explain the situation, reminding her of their agreement and the fact that we had only helped with the spaying. She explained that we were simply returning Lusi to the place where she had been living for the past month. D.U. responded: "HELPED? IF YOU HADN'T COME, I WOULD HAVE TAKEN HER TO THE RIVER SO SHE COULD GIVE BIRTH WHEREVER SHE WANTS. A STRAY DOG MEANS NOTHING TO ME." The sweet Lusi, who used to play with her Beagle, was now just a stray dog to her. And poor Lusi, overjoyed to be home, ran to play with her Beagle friend, approached D.U. to greet her, and then something happened that shocked us all… A KICK TO THE HEAD OF THE JUST-SPAYED DOG. At that moment, we realized how serious the situation was and that her life was in danger. But what now? Where could she go? Whom could we leave her with? Sadness, anger, and so many questions. Where has all the humanity and empathy gone? Lusi is currently safe, but we are looking for a loving home for her. She is wonderful, she longs for a home, peace, and to make someone happy with her smile when they pet her head. Someone who would never hurt her or treat her life as disposable. Please help us find Lusi a forever home where she will be loved and safe.
